Parent volunteers: Officials and others roles
Hi BCC families!
If you have swum with us before, you know that we rely on parent volunteers for our season to run. Swim meets require parents to time races, officiate, and more. We recognize that making time to volunteer can be difficult, and the coaches and swimmers appreciate all your hard work!
I am looking for people interested in a few higher-commitment parent volunteer positions: officials, team managers, and CVSL board members. These positions are available to new and returning parents. They can be a great way to get involved with the team for the first time or to put previous experience to use! Please let me know if you are interested in one of these jobs, and I can provide more information.
Officials
An official’s job is to watch swimmers’ races to make sure that they are swimming legally. Becoming an official involves a very brief training process to ensure that you are up-to-date on competition rules. BCC is required to provide three officials at all our meets, home or away. That means that the more officials we have, the less often each has to officiate. Please help out our current officials (whom we appreciate so much!) by signing up. We count on your support!
Becoming an official requires three things:
- Attending a one-time, virtual training session. There is one coming up soon:
- Virtual S+T clinic — 6/18 from 6-7:30pm. Email [email protected] to sign up.
- Shadowing certified officials for 2-3 meets. A good low-stakes opportunity for this is at our Mock Meet on 6/20, two days after the clinic. There will also be an opportunity for shadowing at our Distance Meet on 7/13.
- Passing an open-note, multiple-choice test with a score of 80% or higher. This test can be taken after you have finished shadowing and are more comfortable with the stroke requirements.
Team Managers
This summer, I am looking for a couple of parent “managers” to take on additional responsibilities. Delegating the following tasks will make the season run more smoothly and allow the coaches to dedicate more time to helping your swimmers be successful in the pool.
Volunteer Coordinator — Manages the parent volunteers required for swim meets. The Volunteer Coordinator will use SwimTopia to help parents sign up for volunteer roles and will recruit volunteers for any positions that have not been filled. (Est. 4-5 hrs/wk)
States Coordinator — Arranges certain details for our States meet in August. The States Coordinator will see to tasks such as reserving a block of hotel rooms for participating families and organizing a team dinner on Saturday night. (Est. 2-3 hrs/wk)
Media Manager — Requests photos from parents and compiles them into an album. The Media Manager will also communicate with BCC’s marketing team and help carry out their new marketing plan. (Est. 2-3 hrs/wk)
CVSL Board Members
If you are looking to get more involved in our end-of-season meets, the CVSL (Champlain Valley Swim League) is trying to increase parent input at their meetings. I am looking for a parent to be a voting member of the board. This is a very small commitment — the board has two, 90-minute meetings between April and June that are great opportunities to provide input on our Leagues meet. If being a voting member doesn’t interest you, you can still attend as all meetings are open to the public.
Additionally, the CVSL is actively looking for a new treasurer. Our former treasurer (Logan Hall-Potvin, for those who may know him!) has left the league, and we are in search of a replacement. Very little knowledge or experience is needed — the League uses QuickBooks for everything. The revenue and expenses are very simple, and the commitment is low; the former treasurer estimates 6-10 hours for the entire season.

In summary, if you are interested in being an official, team manager, or CVSL board member, just send me a message and I will try to answer any questions you may have. I appreciate all that you contribute to this team, and I am looking forward to another wonderful summer!
